In the last thirty years there has been an extraordinary increase in the production of English dictionaries. While there have been interesting innovations in layout and design, in many fundamental respects the dictionaries produced today are very similar to those of several centuries ago. In this study, Henri Bejoint argues that this conservatism reflects the importance of dictionaries as cultural artifacts. The way they are and have been, he argues, exerts a powerful influence on popular ideas of what they should continue to be.
